The TGS2005 - 4Gamer.Net, translated by fuse
The chairman of Gravity speaks -- an interview with Kim [2005/09/20 11:19]

After September 21st when the Tokyo Game Show(TGS) was held, we made it our priority to keeping in touch with Gravity, as the newly advertised Ragnarok was to be released in 2006.

The chairman of Gravity Co. LTD. hestitated to devulge any details about the upcoming release of Ragnarok Online 2 (the sequel to RO). Since the chairman was busy, we were only able to speak with him for 30 minutes or less. However we did have the opportunity to speak directly to him. He spoke about general game developments and the future plans for the company. He especially expressed his concerns with the Gravity and the "game industry", and what it takes to be a developer.

4Gamer: Let us get to the point at hand. We will ask our questions promptly because we have limited time with you. Gravity and Ragnarok Online of late are becoming the largest online game franchise in the industry in Korea and Japan. Can you please tell us how this came to be in your own words?

Gravity: My pleasure. There are some rumors circulating that tend to die fast. Gravity as a company has grown very fast, it finally has grown into a global enterprise as apparent that we're now listed with NASDAQ. Even when we took up operations in America, we had an excessively low turn-out. The results of which caused a voice of protest from many of our shareholders. With the threat of a series of lawsuits hanging over us, it caused me great stress.

4Gamer: Don't you think with respect to monetary figures, the stock price is a contributing factor that determines whether the enterprise can develop into global operations?

Gravity: It's all about obtaining the opportunity. For example Chinese Ragnarok is responsible for nearly 3-4 times the profit made here in Korea. But you have to understand our situation here in Korea is special (with the country being split and the risk of war). These factors considered are responsible for Gravity's low appraisal. While it's this circumstance that's hurting Gravity the most, moving to global enterprise and making the game available worldwide in 39 countries and areas (hypothetical) is just not plausable. Speaking for the company and shareholders, it's reached the point where the plan is to create a partnership with other companies (or 3rd parties) to develop Ragnarok in other countries. In the case of EZER corportation (as an example), eventually it reaches a point where a relationship and reliance is formed.

4Gamer: How does this come to be. What is communicated, did EZER propose this to Gravity or vice-versa?

Gravity: I make no comment as to be expected to either one making the first proposal concerning this. Let's just say it's sort of like "Romeo and Juliet" and mutual love, it is the result of being born in relation to each other. Both companies need each other to survive.

4Gamer: To what extent do you believe this is the best option. Looking at what is sufficient and works, what made you design this method?

Gravity: Of course, but we didn't devise the method. The joint-venture of big business was observed. But I truely doubted Gravity would ever reach that point where Gravity was considered a value of enterprise. But in our case and the case of Gravity, we needed to secure ourselves, having a stronger impact is sometimes necessary to achieve this.

4Gamer: There is certainly a suffient impact. But what was the reaction besides in Korea?

Gravity: The Korean game industry and media, Korean game technology pours out into other countries. Which is sometimes blamed, but I never think that way. For example Sanxing Electron which leads POSCO and worldwide electronic industry is an enormous steel enterprise in Korea, presently the foreigners posseses 60% or more of stock equity. 52% of which was sold to to overseas entrepenaurs. Even then we tend to blame when things don't go as well that "its a foreign enterprise" (blaming something that doesn't exist). However, since its a Korean product, it must still represent Korea. When you look at it from this angle, Gravity continues to be a Korean enterprise (not selling out to foreigners). It's not technology we're sellling, it's culture.

4Gamer: In regard to the opinion which is pointed out, what do you think of using technology poured out from other countries?

Gravity: You have understood the fact that is is such an indication. But in the case of Gravity's new works, as for "Ragnarok Online 2" and "Requiem", the respective Unreal Engine 2 and Bu Rio engine is used. The "game engine" and the "server" is certainly important for designing any online game. However instead of worrying what technology is used, planning is more important to the success of the game, don't you think? Thinking in this way allows us to watch from a view of panoramic perspective, and see if culture sells (since natively designed technology is less of a factor in the success).

4Gamer: To a certain extent. But it still can't wipe out the opinions that are being largely picked up on to the latest case, don't you think?

Gravity: It can't. You think of it as seeing objectively. But actually, 2003 and 2004, Gravity continued to win the "Korean cultural contents export grand prix". You establish employement beginning at 5, but presently, our employment rate is nearing a scale of 600. But you must realize much of which should be considered technical outflow, by 3rd parties - regretably. From Korean users, Gravity is becoming a Japanese company with emerged idea that "RO has stopped" (Gravity's merger with Japanese "GunHo Interactive" ). But as you know that's a narrow way of looking at it. Enterprising makes you think that as well, decidably with problems with keeping stock (preventing overhead which costs the company additional costs).

4Gamer: But considering that narrow point of view, in regards to the rumor of a merger with GunHo Online Entertainment? You can't deny the sudden merger as a great possibility it presents for the company.

Gravity: I can't answer that question from my own viewpoint. Presentrly I am no more than an advisor for Gravity. As for that story, that's for new management to decide. However, I believe the merger creates a synergy (Cooperative interaction among groups, especially among the acquired subsidiaries or merged parts of a corporation, that creates an enhanced combined effect.)

4Gamer: Considering that, you have the ability to utilize the merits of both Japan and Korea, it was to be expected one day the two would come together to join in development. (fuse note: *tear* it reminds me of when Squaresoft and Enix merged to become SquarEnix)

I'll translate the few remaining pages later, took me 2 hours x_x
