Is there any general advice anyone could give me about the game.
Well for one thing, since I have lost all my respect for Gravity as a company with their shameless selling of items: which they accused us of, choose your provider for the game. Free is not always better, but it can be. High rate servers while fun to experiment with have bad economies, consider that.
Secondly, since you're new with no characters, you may want to consider a class that depends less on equipment, since you won't have enough money for the good items. I personally would recommend becoming a mage. This is mostly due to the simplicity. The only downfall to this is you're going to die more often, and you'll have to wait to regenerate SP.
Level to Base 6x/ Job 50 for maximum potential. This isn't always worth it for every class, but you don't lose anything but your patience, and you have everything to gain...
Anyone is free to add to what I've said. Feel free to ask more specific questions, because I'm not sure if you're asking it because you think there is some specific trick to the game, or you just have no idea to becoming a high level player.
