One things for sure, you gotta keep moving... I'd just find useful items, type my progress on a type writer. And somehow by the very end find my way into a sticky situation to which I kick butt and survive...

But to be all honest... I probably would find items such as gun and ammo and try to get out of the city and find help. Call in the national guard or something, so they can nuke the place.

Something I always wondered is how you can kill a zombie with a gun... I guess the dead can be reanimated, so they must be killed a second time.
