If they do charge, they have no right to charge you more than a couple dollars if the game is popular. That gives enough money to feed the families of GMs, programmers, and the company. All the rest is just to pad their wallets!
Remember, nothing in this world is ever free. And if you find out something is, don't tell me about it until you've checked your pockets, and your body for stiches and holes.

Why dont they get all thier profits thru selling cds like creating a new version evry three months and sell it for like 10 bucks or something. I mean they could gain money thru selling CDs and not on monthly fees.
