Level-Up! surrenders to underground economy

If you can’t beat them, join them. And for online game distributor Level-Up! it would be time to capitalize on the growing popularity of real-money trading (RMT) and “bots.”
Instead of weeding out cheaters and sellers of game items, Level-Up! is supporting the growing underground economy by coming up with some activities related to RMT and bots.
For one, Level-Up!, which distributes several titles including the widely popular Ragnarok, is already letting its players to sell items through its official online forums (www.levelupgames.ph).
The company is even planning to have an online auction of rare items on June 28. Although the online auction is not new for the company, the money would be real and not just using Ragnarok’s “zenny” currency.
And for users of automated Ragnarok characters called “bots,” the company said it is allowing players to continue using them if only to collect zennies and items. Only during guild competitions would bot users not be allowed entry.
RMT is trading of virtual game items, especially rare ones, for real money. Some trades could go as low as a few hundred pesos to as high as thousands of pesos.
Likewise, bots are software added to the installation client of a game. Bots have specific functions but mostly are used by players to collect more zennies or items.
“The online game community has become so organic and so diverse that it would be hard to control people from going beyond the bounds of game rules. It’s not cheating anymore because everyone is doing it already and it’s becoming beneficial for everyone,” according to Level-Up! Chief Operating Officer Sheila Paul.
Paul stressed that RMT is beyond the control of any game distributor since its players can do their trading discreetly.
On the other hand, bot users are hard to identify especially since some of the bots responses are “intelligent” unless these become repetitive.
She added that bot users are also the same ones who sell the items they found for real money.
“It’s becoming a lucrative business and for one thing, even bot users still have to pay for the time they play the game,” Paul said.
Paul admitted that at any given time, a fifth of Ragnarok players are using bots.
While Level-Up! has limited methods against RMTs, the company is still hoping to manage bot users by telling guild masters to monitor their members.
“But our message about RMT and bot usage is this: if you’re using them, be responsible,” Paul said.

So pathetic... Paul shouldn't be the speaking symbol for the company, because that's just a BAD idea. >_>;

Level Up! acknowledges that "botting" cannot be fully prevented. However, in respect to keeping the game fair and having a healthy virtual economy, Level Up! still continues in its efforts to control the negative impact of bots. One of these efforts is the patch for Ragnarok Online, Episode 12: Lighthalzen, scheduled for July 5 which hopefully will bring down the numbers of bots in the game. Another is stricter enforcement of rules banning bots especially when it comes to guild sieges.
Another campaign is RagnaREUNION which is all about bringing back the community aspect of Philippine Ragnarok Online. In RagnaREUNION, Level Up! once again brings its GMs (Game Masters) across the country to host mini-tournaments (Boss Time Attack eXtreme!), band performances and a meet-and-greet with local players (see related story on this page).
It will also be at these events where Level Up! will solicit the help of the community. As part of the RagnaREUNION campaign, veteran players and guild masters are personally being contacted by LU! Community GMs to help promote responsible gaming--which includes discouraging botting--amongst their guild mates and friends. Level Up! strongly believes that an empowered community is the strongest form of defense against anything detrimental to the game.
Level Up! also acknowledges that it cannot curb the practice of "Php" (in-game item trading for real money) especially since these transactions happen outside of the game. That is why Level Up! has devised alternative ways by which players can obtain rare in-game items without paying cash such as the Honor Roll program where student players who get good grades in school get rewarded with select in-game items.
Another program LU! will soon launch is the Item Auction feature within its new game account management system, My Level Up! Every time a player tops up his game account, he earns Reward Points. Once he has accumulated a substantial amount of Reward Points, he could then use them to bid for in-game items in their favorite LU! game (Ragnarok, ROSE, RF and FreeStyle) using the Item Auction feature.

you dont have to blur out your swears, you can suck fuck, shit and assholes all you want, well no really, just not spamming it. And yea really, what a shitty idea, but I hear pRO hires GMs that play ro and dont pay them, so no wonder the gms would let the bots go off scott free, they dont really care, they can already make themselves more powerful then any botter.

They're doing the easier of two things. Not enforcing it is irresponsible, and well... easier than policing the thing. What disgusts me the most is how they're promoting it, "Hey, sell your account on our BBS for real money!".

Even iRO with all of the CRAPPY rules has the players interests in mind. I just wish any service would stamp out bots perminently.

I don't think botting would apply to pRO Sakray. I'm not sure about RMT though I see a few people trading zeny for game time.

What LU games said is actually pretty good. But I think this sentence should have a bolded word.
Episode 12: Lighthalzen, scheduled for July 5 which will hopefully will bring down the number of bots in the game.
I like their programs, but the idea of "neighborhood watch" idea is crap. iRO has the same program. Some of my guild members botted, and our entire guild was at risk of being banned. Discourage bots INSIDE guilds, BY PUNISHING EVERYONE, even people who don't bot... uhm... yah right that'll work!
All the more reason NOT to report them!
