Okay, you lazy bums... get out there and get this game! The game was leaked on the internet earlier this month, so I've already put 30 hours of gameplay into it since I got it around the 11th, and my friend from Florida has already put 70+ hours!

Let me just say it's an absolutely amazing game. They've changed up many of the traditional battle system features to make it easier and more streamlined. Characters now run on gambits, which means if you have the gambits set up correctly the game does all of the leveling for you! All you gotta do is move around ^^

There is no freedom to travel such as a world map but instead it works zone to zone, sorta like RO works. It some ways it has the feel of an MMORPG even though it's a single player RPG. They've incorporated these elements in. Even the battles with the other characters on gambits makes the game feel like you're playing with other people online. If I were to tell you the game was online and all you could do is watch, you would think it was online, aside from the fact I wouldn't be wearing a headset or sending messages.

Warning, some game-technical spoilers

The new battle system is comprised of: Attack, Magicks & Technicks, Mists, and Items. Attack attacks a monster. Magicks are stuff like white magic, black magic, green magic, time magic, and so forth. Technicks are like Steal, Libra, 1,000 needles, Gil Toss, etc. (Do note that technicks do not require any MP to use). Mists are quickenings and summons. Quickening are like limit breaks, but instead of you amassing rage to use them, once you achieve max MP you can activate them. The summons are Espers, which haven't been seen since the days of FF3. But if you played FF& you would remember them as summons, for the FF8 users, guardian forces, and for FF10 users - Aeons. Basically that's all the same. Finally last but not least, an item menu for using both supportive and offensive items in battle.

Many parts of the game have been simplified. For instance, battles do not occur at random, but instead, I can best describe it as a Zelda-esk type of battles, on steroids. It has the feel of a traditional FF style battle, but all the enemies you can see long before some blurry, overly drawn battle music occurs. The music doesn't change for the heigtened heat of the occassion, the only exception being boss battles.

Speaking of music, the music is on par, if not some exceed the standards of a final fantasy game. I'm a big fan of the boss music, aside from it's repetiveness, it makes those long battles go by fast.

One thing to note is this game does have an active battle engine, and not turned based. I don't think any FF's except for a tactics have used turn-based. So using the gambits comes in handy, because based on rule sets, you can combine them together to create deadly combos, and keep your party members doing what you'd be doing for them. You can turn them on or off for each party member. So, if for for you'd like to turn off the gambits for one of the party members you can control them, and the other 2 can be controlled by the computer. Or if you'd like none can be controlled by the computer. Or finally if you like, all 3 can be controlled by the computer. What's nice is even when the gambits are active, you can still control them and go back and change their current command to something you want them to do. So those gambits roll out fast, the battles go by fast.

In terms of plot, it's a good plot. Character development seemed not too rushed, but not lengthy either. I guess my biggest problem is 20 hours into the game you've got all the party members you will have for the entire game.

I forgot to mention. Aside from the 7 playable characters that comprise a battle party (max 3), you can also have what's called Guest. This guest runs on his or her own gambits, and you cannot control him or her. What's nice though is sometimes you get a 4th for the extra DPS or extra healing, it can really help even the tides of gameplay. However, you can never decide when you have this guest, it all happens at random and goes along with the storyline.

If I could summarize this game from what I've played so far it's like combining elements of the following games:

FF3, FF7, FF8, Tactics, MMORPG (for instance WoW), and Star Ocean.

FF3 for ideas and game style
FF7 for game style
FF8 for game style
Tactics for music/class styles
MMORPG for questing/guild/battle style
Star Ocean for battle style (gambits under a different name existed in this game)

When it comes out halloween I'm buying it. I should probably go reserve a copy... I got the version I DLed for the time being Oops

Square always has to put in a heavenly looking angel into the game. Her skin even looks beautiful. In terms of other characters, amount of detail, I think they spent the most with Fran. Just look at what she's wearing, and her legs... She's got a gentle calming voice.

Haha.. well, the game releases statewide tomorrow. So I'm going to try and pick up a copy. Drooling

Edit: Bah... noone has posted lately in this thread, so I have to edit my post. >_<

I picked this up on release date, I got lucky finding it at BestBuy. So far the game is really fun, however I am currently finding myself bashing my forehead into the controller as Game Over appears over my head.

[Minor Spoiler]

Getting out of the Leviathan is a pain in the arse.

I just wrote a topic then saw this sigh!

The game is pretty sweet, my only gripe is that black magik is kinda not very effective because of the gambit system. Also the storyline isnt as good as FFT, where every battle was significant, "YOU KILLED MY SISTER!" "OMG I DONT CARE ABOUT HER DEATH, NOW ITS ABOUT POWER!" that was an awsome game. The game seems more like it is gonna be all, after you beat it you'll see the big picture etc.

Hopefully they allow you to play the game afterwards with a few options if you feel like it, like All your MP and Grid Unlocks+Gambit options, that way magik can be more effective. Like tales of symphonia.

I'm only after rathiwels tomb right now, dont have much time to play sigh! cant wait to see whats gonna happen next, hopefully more people die.

I don't like Vaan as a main character either, Balthier would have been so much better.

Personally I don't feel that square puts as much into their characters since FF7 and FF8. I thought FF8's characters were friggin' great.

Yes, FF8 was a very great game all around. Oops It's my favorite in the series. Character design was good, personalities fit their appearance, and the story was superb! Happy Anyways, I've gotten pretty far into FF12 and I have to say it is still pretty interesting.

I'm playing this thing in between my RO life, and so far, I'm really enjoying myself. It's been a while since I played a really, REALLY good FF game.

I'm currently heading over to the tomb in the game (and building up my characters at the same time). I have to agree about the Leviathan too... that is until I discovered the wonder that is Quickening... Tickled Pink I think I linked like 7-8 Quickenings on Ghis before I messed up. It was so much damage that it went straight to the end of the battle with me not even seeing how much I dealt. Hehehe...

I'm actually building the characters ala ROish... to make it a bit more interesting. Vaan and Ashe are pretty much Paladin-style while I have Basch as the heavy tank/hitter. Balthier and Fran are both range, but I am building Fran with as much magick as possible (heck, I already have all 3 Quickenings on her at level 15... /gg). Penelo I'm building like a thief more or less... she'll rely more on Techniks rather than Magick. We'll see how she turns out.

The hunts are quite fun too... just try not to get ahead of yourself (I died to that Wraith a few times before I figured out what I needed to do).
