Well, I'm probably the victim of fraud, identity theft, and maybe both here. I just received an e-mail from Paypal asking me if I wanted to add a new contact (someone I've never heard of before) to my Paypal account… the thing is, I never made any Paypal account. I've contacted Paypal's security department and am currently waiting for a reply. I hope I'm not being ripped-off here. I don't make a lot of money and a fraud could really bankrupt me… SHIT!
Aw... Did you email them? Hmmm... maybe a friend invited you to join PayPal... Like in Friendster, they give you emails when you're invited asking you to join and add a contact or something like that...

That could likely be a Phishing email... since you said you don't have a Paypal account.
And my Paypal got hacked into and someone was charging stuff to these zeny-for-money sites and stuff. Good thing the Security folks there in Paypal picked it up, red-flagged it and put a stop to it before it became a huge issue. I got some of my money back, but there are still some open issues being investigated.
I pretty much changed my login and password after that and changed my password for everything else I had. I also had the email associated to my Paypal deleted.
Simple fact... do not reply to any email you receive that you KNOW you have nothing to do with. There are folks out there that have nothing better to do but screw over folks making an honest living. You just need to be diligent about these things.

Nah, the e-mail really stated that I had a Paypal account and asked me if I wanted to add this guy that I never even heard of as a new favourite (whatever the hell that means…). It also said that if I didn't want to add him as a new favourite, I only had to contact them by clicking "this link", but the link didn't worked… For now I've checkd my bank account and nothing's missing. Yes, I did e-mail Paypal, I contacted their security department. Tomorrow I'll call my credit card company to check.
Edit: Phishing e-mail eh? I'll keep an eye out for those… But usually when I see a weird e-mail, I just flush it.

That's so cruel... why do people abuse they're the internet?
Well, good news. There's still no money missing from my bank account and no one has tryed to use my credit card. Turns out Idyot was probably right and it was a phishing e-mail. good thing I didn't bite! Anyhow, I'll still be checking my bank account and credit card account from time to time, just to make sure…

Yeah, some scams are easy to spot; I won't be helping any Nigerian prince believe you me! But anyhow, I think they're attempting to Phish me again… I've received another "Paypal" e-mail concerning my (non-existant) account… I wish those crooks would just f**king die off!

I received an e-mail from a russian oil company telling me they where trying to raise $ 45 millions to avoid bankruptcy and that I was welcom to give whatever I could contribute, but this wasn't all technically legal so that I shouldn't contact the authorities… Are some of these people even TRYING to rip us off

But trust me... they do it because there are folks out there that ARE stupid enough to fall for it. EVERYTIME!!!
Unless people get smart about stuff like these, they won't stop... simple fact... unfortunately...

The best way to avoid being defrauded is to remain objective, even around your friends! They will stab you in the back for the price of an extra value meal... and remember, flame-broiled isn't always better. Nevermind but trust me on the beer.
fuse said:Aww... but getting scammed is half the fun of life. Especially when you lead them to a dead account that you set up for cops to monitor.

Heh... if you got the skills to counter it, be my guest...
The thing is... the folks that fall for these things are for the most part not that tech savvy.
